The Problem

Drainage systems using gravel and sand require large volumes of material, heavy-duty transportation, and time-consuming installation. Low-quality geotextile mats, made from a cotton blend, degrade rapidly in acidic soils or when exposed to chemicals, compromising the entire project.

The Wavin Bidim® Geotextile Fabric Solution

Bidim© Wavin is made of 100% pure needle-punched polyester—with no cotton blend. It offers indefinite resistance to acids, alkalis, oils, solvents, and roots. Full traceability is ensured by the original Bidim brand, guaranteeing the quality the market demands. Costs are reduced by up to 25% compared to traditional systems using gravel or sand.

Bidim geotextile standards: NBR 12568 (mass per unit area) · NBR 12569 (thickness) · NBR 12824 (tensile strength, already tabled above by line) · NBR 13359 (puncture, CBR piston) · NBR ISO 11058 (permeability) · NBR ISO 12956 (filtration opening, O95).

How to specify Bidim in a project spec sheet

The 4 properties a drainage or filtration project needs to state, and the standard governing each one.

Permeability (k)NBR ISO 11058How fast water passes through the fabric
Tensile strengthNBR 12824Already tabled by line on this page (GT7 to RT31)

Don't confuse: waterproofing veil × drainage fabric

The VP line is a veil for waterproofing — used under asphalt membranes or geomembranes, protecting against puncture and distributing stress. It doesn't replace a waterproofing membrane, it protects one. The GT and RT lines, on the other hand, are geotextiles for filtration and drainage: they retain soil particles while letting water through — the fabric that wraps drain pipes and reinforces subdrainage systems.

Geotextile sleeve × Techdreno KC®: which to use

If the project has already settled on a drain pipe with a fabric sleeve — fine or clayey soil, or uncertainty about the ground — the ready-made Bidim geotextile sleeve (2 to 10 inch sizes) is the most practical way to apply it. If the priority is a simpler material list on site, Techdreno KC® already comes with geotextile built in via micro-slits, skipping the sleeve — but it works best in sandy or coarse-grained soil.

VP05 (also searched as "VP50"): the manufacturer's official code is VP 05 — the "05" refers to the line's 50 g/m² weight, used as waterproofing reinforcement (not to be confused with the RT/GT/CC lines, which are for drainage and filtration and are not specified by weight).

FAQ

Common questions about Wavin Bidim® Geotextile Fabric

Bidim is a needle-punched nonwoven fabric, ideal for filtration and drainage because it maintains uniform porosity. Woven geotextiles are better for soil reinforcement, but they filter less effectively. Bidim combines both functions in its RT series.
Yes. Bidim sleeves are available in sizes ranging from 2 to 10 inches, ready to be wrapped around drainage pipes. A more practical alternative is Techdreno KC, whose micro-slots need no wrapping fabric on the pipe.
GT for general filtration and drainage, RT for soil reinforcement with high tensile strength (up to 31 kN/m), CC for concrete curing (reusable at least 4 times), and VP as a waterproofing membrane.
Yes. Because it is made of 100% polyester, Bidim is resistant to acids, alkalis, oils, solvents, and biological agents in the soil. It does not decompose due to microorganisms or roots.
Varies by product line: from 4.7 kN/m (GT7, light filtration) to 31 kN/m (RT31, heavy reinforcement). ExtraDren withstands 200 kPa of compression for subdrainage.
Yes. Bidim is widely used in landfills as a filtration, separation, and protective layer for geomembranes. Chemical resistance is essential in this harsh environment.
