There is no doubt that effective control of soil moisture is very important for agricultural production, as excess moisture can be very harmful. It can be caused by artificial factors (irrigation processes) or natural factors (excessive rainfall), the latter being the most common. According to the Government of the State of Paraná, due to excess moisture in the state, the 2021 grain harvest was projected to be 3% lower than the previous year’s.
Of course, rain isn’t always bad for farmers. In the right amount, it’s essential for any type of crop. However, in excess, it makes harvesting difficult, promotes the emergence of various crop diseases, and, in more severe cases, causes roots and fruits to rot.

Excess moisture and the soil
From childhood, we learn how important water is for the soil and for plants. After all, it is responsible for delivering nutrients and minerals to the soil, which are absorbed by plants during their nutritional processes.
However, when there is heavy rainfall in agricultural regions, problems begin to arise. Just to give you an idea, the lack of sunlight slows down photosynthesis in plants, which compromises their metabolism and results in weaker grains that are more susceptible to pests.

- Erwinia carotovora.

Types of drainage to control excess moisture in the soil

- Surface drainage: This is the most well-known type and is ideal for level terrain. In this method, open ditches (also called drainage trenches) are created to drain excess water from the surface. However, it is not as effective as subsurface drainage;
- Subsurface drainage: in this case, excess moisture is removed from within the soil through drainage pipes with controlled depth and slope. When properly implemented, this is a precise, almost “surgical,” and uniform process for moisture control. Thus, it ensures greater control of the water table level and, at the same time, the availability of water for the roots at the correct depth.
